9 Ways to Stand Up to Hazing

We’ve seen the movie. We’ve heard the stories. Someone is in a situation in which they are being hazed or are witnessing someone being hazed…and they let it happen even though they know it is wrong.

We’re here to empower you to stand up to hazing! Yes, it can often be difficult to stand up for what is right and make a lasting change, especially when you’re standing up against people who are your friends.

But imagine what could happen if no one stands up. Now, imagine how good it will feel to do the right thing! (We can assure you that it will feel a lot better than the alternative.)

Here are nine ways you can stand up to hazing. Get your superhero cape ready. These tips really could change your world.

1. Just say “no.” This one word is sometimes all it takes.

2. Host an intervention with those who are hazing.

3. Take confidence that your sisters are likely disturbed, too. Stand up as a group!

4. Don’t listen to the excuses. We’ve all heard them: “They agreed to do it.” “It’s not a big deal.” “It’s tradition.” LIES!

5. Listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it!

6. Tell someone. A simple phone call can be all it takes to stop hazing.

Talk to an advisor, your campus fraternity/sorority professional, International Office staff, or call 1-888-NOT-HAZE.

7. Plan team-building activities that are safe and fun. Since when did being demeaned make you feel as warm and fuzzy as a trust fall?
07_Trust Fall
Ok, so not a trust fall (ouch!). How about one of these?

8. Make sure your entire chapter knows the rules and laws about hazing. Ignorance is never an excuse.

9. If hazing is happening, make a pact to change your chapter/campus culture for the better. Don’t let the cycle continue!

What Hollywood has Taught Us About Hazing

Those being hazed are often made to look ridiculous. Even people you never thought could look uncool, like the beloved Zach Morris.

I bet he wishes the bell would save him about now.

But hazers usually look stupid too. I mean…who does this? A ketchup dance?

It’s never the good guys doing the hazing, just the unlikable characters we love to hate. (P.S. Cloaks are never a good look. #creepy)animal_house_1978_omega_pledge_ceremonyanimal house 1

Hazing doesn’t actually teach you things that make you a better member, brother or sister. And it makes the chapter look foolish.

The side effects are almost always painful.

Sometimes hazing hurts more than just those being hazed.

You usually get busted, and that’s never fun. After all, hazing is AGAINST THE LAW in 44 states. You could even get put on the dreaded Double Secret Probation.

9 Signs Your Friends are Being Hazed

We hope none of our sisters haze. The goal: for each chapter to offer an amazing, values-based experience to its new members. If you do, sweet! (If you’re not, well, first, recognize hazing is not helping you build sisterhood. Second, just stop.)

However, we know that hazing is a problem that exists beyond ZTA, beyond fraternities and sororities, and even beyond colleges.

Have friends with one or more of the following symptoms? Call the Hazing Hotline 1-888-NOT-HAZE.

1. Older members confuse their car for a taxi.

9 Reasons Why New Members Aren’t Babies

NHPW_FakeTweetNote: Zoe Zeta is a fictional character, but this image represents tweets we often see.

The babies epidemic.

For the last few years, we’ve seen our many sorority women who once referred to their sisters as new members take a more parental approach, calling these 18- to 20-year-old women “babies.”

Wow. We actually want these members to be intelligent, talented, strong, mature and successful members—women. We want them to make good choices and smart decisions as sisters. We want them to be our future leaders. And yet, some of us are calling them “babies.” It doesn’t add up.

Why? Because they’re not babies. Here are 9 reasons why.

1. They can feed themselves.
01_Feed themselves_Emma Stone

2. They hold their heads up and sit without your support.
02_Sit Up_Baby

3. They don’t need to be fed every few hours. Ok, maybe some do. After all, we’re college students. But at least a bottle is out of the picture.
03_Hungry_Zac Efron

4. They can sit in the front seat.
04_Sit in Front Seat_Baby

5. They can walk and move around without scooting or crawling.
05_Crawling

6. They can respond to their name and smile when you talk to them.
06_Respond to Name_Despicable Me

7. They can communicate, so when something is wrong or they have concerns, they ideally should be able to tell you with actual words. You shouldn’t have to decipher their cooing sounds.

8. They can sleep through the night. Ok, so again, college students sometime struggle with this one, but at least they don’t need to be fed, rocked or sung lullabies to put them back to sleep.
08_sleep_baby

9. And the real kicker—they don’t need their diapers changed. Thank goodness.

Lift new members up by treating them like the amazing women they are!

Hazing—Not so Harmless

Hazing. When people do it, they might think they’re just putting new members through something to “earn their letters. It’s harmless.” Not. So. Much.

Every person is different and how they experience things is different. What might seem harmless might be quite dangerous depending on the person’s experiences.

Here’s an example—a wacky one at that—but you’ll get the idea: The New Member Coordinator wants to make the “newbies earn their letters” by completing some special tasks, so she devises a competition to test their true commitment to sisterhood. “Each new member has to eat 10 hot dogs in 5 minutes … OR ELSE!”

Hotdog Contest

As you can imagine, this might affect new members in varying ways.

9 Signs New Members are having a ZLAMtastic experience

When Zetas invest in new members—in the new member program and in the women personally—they tend to create that special bond of sisterhood that we LOVE to talk about. sisterhood quotes

When they feel it, they kind of geek out on it. When hazing is not a part of the experience, new members can grow into stellar sisters and future leaders from day one.

Here are some ways to know if your new members are REALLY having a ZLAMtastic ZTA experience.

1. They’ve renamed their pet Maud or Ruby.

2. They sing ZTA songs in the shower.
